14.56 lb pike Sam Peters
9.52 lb walleye Pete Saputo
14.15 lb Rainbow Trout Jeremy Quesnelle
1.55 crappie Albert Wong
Where the Fish are and How to Catch 'Em!
PIKE: The pike are still shallow, with
the weather up & down like a toilet seat! The water temperature is
still low. Try some of the back bays in the Honey Harbour area.
Bass Bay has also been very productive. Jerkbaiting with a size 10
or 12 Rapala Husky Jerk or the new XRaps lure have been good or
try the traditional red & white bobber and a big creek shiner.
Good luck!
Top Lure: Blue/silver, Black/gold Rapala HJ12
WALLEYE: The walleye seem to be in the same mood as the
pike. Water temperature is still not to their liking. The fish
seem to be scattered all over. Waubaushene has been productive yet
so have Midland Bay and Penetang Bay. Try fishing the first
drop-off in about 10 to 18 feet of water. Jighead tipped with a
worm has been effective as has "big blue" - an 18B Rapala trolled
or casted in those same areas. If trolling try along Marshall Is
or along the coal dock all the way down to the Wye River.
Top Lure:18B Rapala, chartreuse jig & worm
RAINBOW TROUT: River fisherman have had a treat this year -
cold weather and little rain - which has kept the fish in the
river for an extended period this spring. Coldwater, Sturgeon and
the Hogg Rivers have all been productive.
Top Lure: Worms have been a hot ticket this year, but do
not count out the good old roe bag.
A bonus for you anglers who do not fish the river, the area around
Balm Beach, Doe's Bay and in front of the Lafontaine creek have
all been great areas for trolling this year. Most of the fish have
come from 18' to 30' of water. Body baits are the ticket out there
at this time of year.
Top Lure: Riplin Redfins, Husky Jerks
Check out George'N
Charters for salmon and/or trout charters.
CRAPPIE: With the cold weather I do not think the crappies
know what to do. Lots of good reports Honey Harbour and Port
Severn above the locks seem to be the most productive areas. Check
to see if you can fish in one of the local marinas - these areas
always hold fish around the docks. Hogg's Bay has always been very
good this year.
Top Lure: Prowler tube jigs
